hex0r
A Hexen level editor that runs on your Mac.
Editing in a textured 3D view - the inspector on the right, the map in the middle.
The editor that made it to the Mac
The classic Doom and Hexen editors never made it to Apple Silicon: Ultimate Doom Builder is Windows-only, Eureka has no UDMF, SLADE ships unnotarised. hex0r is the one that runs natively on your Mac - a 3.5 MB binary that needs nothing installed. You edit in a textured 3D view of your map, flying through it with WASD.
- 3D walk-through editing view (fly with WASD) plus a 2D plan view
- Draw, cut and reshape sectors; drag walls, floors and ceilings
- Prefabs and generators (rooms, stairs) you rotate and drop in
- A full inspector: textures, offsets, pegging, specials, thing flags
- Lossless import of stock Hexen WADs to editable text
- Bake to PK3 and Play - launches straight into GZDoom, at the map you were editing
Maps are just text
Your maps are plain UDMF text. They diff, merge and review like any other source file - and importing a stock Hexen WAD back to editable text is lossless: 141,827 entities across all 31 stock maps round-trip byte-identical.
Even standalone games
hex0r builds a playable game from an empty directory: a title, status bar and menus, with no hexen.wad required. Plus a linter that keeps your map honest, a provenance report that tells you what you can share, and cutscenes from plain text.
